Achieve a Winter Glow Without the Sun

Updated: Mar 9, 2020

Don’t risk sun damage or skin cancer

Enjoy a healthy UV free winter

Hi and welcome back to Soraya's Anti-aging Squad blogs, I know its been a while since my last one, being mum of three, running a business, attending educational conferences and seminars keeps me on my toes. Nevertheless I have been meaning to talk about something which I feel passionate about and want to inform you about the risks involved. You can then make an informed decision.

Sunbeds and Solarium's use electricity to produce concentrated artificial ultraviolet (UV) radiation. This causes skin cells to make a pigment called melanin, which tans the skin. The UV radiations here are five times stronger than the midday sun. Wow that is a lot...

Solariums are unsafe. UV radiation from solariums increases your risk of developing skin cancer, can cause eye damage and immediate skin damage, such as sunburn, irritation, redness and swelling.

There really is no such thing as a safe tan from a tanning bed.

In addition to the risk of developing skin cancer, exposure to UV rays causes your skin to age prematurely; yes those wrinkles and pigmentation are side effects of frying your skin either by lying in the sun for too long or using sunbeds.

Is this really worth the risk?!

What benefit apart from the appearance are you getting?

And No!! Tanning beds never provide you with the vitamin D that you need, nor is it safer than tanning outdoors. ... But it is UVB (the sun burning rays) — not UVA — which helps the skin make vitamin D, so you are increasing your risk of skin cancer without receiving any benefit!

As a result of clear evidence demonstrating the link between solarium use and skin cancer, in April 2015 the Western Australian Minister for Health, Dr Kim Hames, announced a ban on the commercial use of solaria in Western Australia. The changes to regulations to introduce the ban were published in the Western Australian Government Gazette on 9 October 2015, and the ban came into effect on 1 January 2016.

Commercial solarium are also banned in Victoria, New South Wales, South Australia, Tasmania, the Australian Capital Territory and Queensland. There are no commercial solarium operating in the Northern Territory. And hopefully this will follow suit in New Zealand soon.

Damage control

During winter you need to be kind to your skin, by treating your skin from the summer months. Your skin would have had enough (if not too much) sun already.

Treat your skin by reversing the sun damage, pigmentation and hydrate by extra moisturiser.

Some of these treatments are:

Chemical Skin Peel

Micro-Needling

LED Light Therapy

Moisturizing Mask Treatment

Winter Tan Glow

Now I get it, for some of you looking tanned is an essential part of looking confident, beautiful and wanting glowing skin especially in the cold weather months, to make you feel and look great.
